The Fiddle & the Accordion
The second concert in the Live from Duchamp Opera House concert series will take place in St. Martinville on Sunday, December 8 after the Christmas Parade. The concert will spotlight two iconic instruments of Cajun music—the fiddle and the accordion—and the musicians will be sharing stories about their music and their instruments in between songs. This a family friendly event, and children are welcome to attend.
The first set from 5:00-6:00 will feature Chris Reed from Grand Bois performing original songs on accordion, as well as some traditional tunes, accompanied by Cameron Fontenot on fiddle. The second set from 6:00-7:00 will feature Cecilia native Forest Huval on fiddle and accordion backed by his band. Doors will open at 4:30, and concertgoers will have the opportunity to explore the historic venue and enjoy the view of downtown St. Martinville from the balcony on the second floor before the show starts. Come for both sets or float in and out as you like.
Those who attended the first concert in October told me that they really appreciated being so close to the performers and being able to interact with them and learn about the music they were playing. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, and the space lends itself to experiencing traditional music live and up close. There’s nothing like hearing the bow against the strings of a fiddle and the reeds of an accordion in person. The historic venue is also turning out to be a great space for recording. The live recording of the October concert has been made available online, and the concert on Sunday will be recorded as well.
The concert is sponsored by Peaceful Habits LLC and the St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce. General admission tickets are fifteen dollars. You can purchase one ahead of time at Eventbrite—Duchamp Opera House. You can also buy tickets at the door on the day of the show until capacity for the venue is reached.
